Zakumi
People keep asking SportsLetter, “Where did the mascots go?” OK, OK …
Next June South Africa will host the men’s FIFA World Cup. While teams across the globe currently are in the midst of qualifying tournaments, we know for sure who one of the attendees will be.
A year ago the Organizing Committee presented Zakumi, the official mascot of the 2010 World Cup. According to the
2010 World Cup website our leopard friend’s name “is a composition of 'ZA', standing for South Africa, and 'kumi' translating into '10' in various languages across Africa. Inspired by his football idols, Zakumi has dyed his hair green as he felt it would be the perfect camouflage against the green of the football pitch.”
We could tell you what makes him so special, but Zakumi’s people have provided us with a video.
